Anti Carb Paste
Application: Anti carb paste is a water based paste applied on to steel parts undergoing carburizing cycle at 1100 – 1200 where selective carbonizing is done in a Pit Type Gas Carbonizing Furnace on specific areas of interest. The hardness on paste applied areas may be nil or too low compared to non-applied areas. The thickness of the coating applied will be dependent on the case depth of the cycle processed.
Less than 0.5mm : single coat
Less than 1.5mm : two coats
Greater than 1.5mm : three coats
This method of preventing carbon pick up is better than the earlier conventional methods of copper coating for many obvious reasons which are known to experienced metallurgists.
Process :
- De rust the components, if necessary, and dust off the loose particles.
- Degrease thoroughly with a suitable degreasing solvent and dry.
- For cases up to 0.5mm, apply a uniform coat of the paste though a brush on the required areas and allow it to dry at the heat treatment shop ambience and at 70C/80C for a period of 45min to 1 hour.
- For cases up to 0.5mm, apply a uniform coat of the paste though a brush on the required areas and allow it to dry at the heat treatment shop ambience and at 70C/80C for a period of 45min to 1 hour.
- Apply a second coat of the paste for cases above 0.5mm (up to 1.5mm) after the first coat is dried at ambience and dry the second coat in oven as described as above.
- Apply a third coat of the paste for cases above 1.5mm and dry sequentially as above and finally dried it an air oven at 70◦C/80C for 45min to 1 hour.
- Apply a third coat of the paste for cases above 1.5mm and dry sequentially as above and finally dried it an air oven at 70◦C/80C for 45min to 1 hour.
- The above sequence is a guideline but the customer can establish his drying sequence as per the climate, the preheating temperature not exceeding 90 /100◦C. Appearance of small bubbles may be there after preheating.
- Observe for foreign particles on the coating like bristles etc.,
- Jig in such a way that coated components do not touch or abrade with each other.
- Carburize as per the recommended cycle.
- Remove the particles left after quenching by mechanical cleaning with a wire brush.
